WD Revenue Rises 55%: How Much of the HDD Boom Reaches Korean Component Suppliers?

Separate storage revenue from component orders, and measure profitability through plated area, yield and delivery performance.

· BIZPECTRA Editorial

WD reported fiscal Q1 2027 revenue of $4.381 billion on October 22, 2026, up 55% year on year and 17% sequentially. The quarter ended October 2. GAAP gross margin was 57.8%; non-GAAP gross margin was 58.1%. These company results do not establish order growth for individual Korean component suppliers.

Do not translate revenue growth into drive units

The implications and actions below are BIZPECTRA analysis. Revenue reflects pricing and product mix as well as shipments. Higher capacity per drive does not necessarily increase component count or plated area proportionately. Model demand using customer production units, usage per unit, supplier allocation and process scope.

Find Spot Plating opportunities in approved drawings

Check whether a product transition changes component geometry, substrate or surface requirements. Selective plating can be assessed for reduced metal use, but savings depend on area, thickness, recovery and inspection costs. Validate adhesion, cleanliness, thickness variation and downstream compatibility against customer specifications.

Manage orders alongside cash flow

Keep forecasts, development samples, qualifications and firm purchase orders separate. Buying substrate and plating metals against unconfirmed forecasts can increase financing and inventory costs. Dollar revenue does not eliminate FX exposure when purchasing currencies and settlement dates differ. Align production with firm orders and validated capacity, including freight, split shipments and rework in cost per finished component.

Actions for component suppliers

  1. Break customer plans into product units and component usage per unit.
  2. Track samples, qualifications, forecasts and firm POs separately.
  3. Calculate plated-area, thickness, material-utilization and reject costs per finished part.
  4. Match purchasing and collection dates when measuring FX exposure.
  5. Separate emergency freight and split-delivery charges from volume pricing.
  6. Use actual records to demonstrate sample and engineering-change lead times.

BIZPECTRA assessment

Korean precision suppliers can demonstrate value through repeatable quality, validated delivery and flexible development support that reduce inspection, inventory and rework costs. WD’s results are a market signal; investment decisions require actual orders and process-level economics.

CHEMNEX · Global B2B Supply Chain

CHEMNEX connects inquiries on materials, precision surface treatment and R2R/Spot Plating for HDD-related components. Share drawings, substrate, plating location and thickness, volume and delivery needs to review samples, qualification and production. This does not imply customer approval or an awarded order.
