U.S. Durable Goods Orders Rise 1.8%: Korean Exporters Should Follow Customer Sectors, Not the Headline

Separate orders from shipments and sector demand, then track RFQs through collections.

· BIZPECTRA Editorial

The U.S. Census Bureau reported on October 27, 2026 that September durable-goods orders rose 1.8% month on month to $345.4 billion. Transportation orders rose 4.6%; orders excluding transportation rose 0.5%. Transportation accounted for $5.2 billion of the $6.3 billion overall increase.

Management focus
  • Do not apply the headline to every customer sector
  • Orders and shipments signal different stages
  • Recalculate growth through cash flow and total cost
  • Actions for sector-based export sales

Do not apply the headline to every customer sector

The implications and actions below are BIZPECTRA analysis. Review customer industries, products and equipment plans rather than manufacturing in aggregate. Translating aircraft or other concentrated demand into assumed demand for general machinery or automotive components can misallocate sales effort and inventory. Compare customer RFQs and sample requests with actual orders.

Orders and shipments signal different stages

Reuters reported a 0.5% increase in nondefense capital-goods orders excluding aircraft and a 1.2% increase in shipments. These do not establish imports of Korean parts or orders for an individual supplier. Dollar-denominated U.S. manufacturing orders, Korean export volumes and your own shipments are different measures. Customer inventory and production plans affect component delivery timing.

Recalculate growth through cash flow and total cost

Dollar orders require financing between material purchases, production, shipping and collections. Separate forecasts from firm POs when securing materials, and include settlement dates, currencies, freight and split-delivery charges. Evaluate sales by conversion into qualifications, firm orders, shipments and collections, alongside quotation activity.

Actions for sector-based export sales

  1. Segment buyers into industrial machinery, power, automotive and electronics.
  2. Compare investment plans with RFQs and sample requests.
  3. Separate materials required for forecasts from those for firm POs.
  4. Connect purchasing, production, shipment, collection and FX reference dates.
  5. Quote total cost including rejects, reinspection, inventory and emergency freight.
  6. Track official data revisions alongside actual customer production plans.

BIZPECTRA assessment

Targeted sector selection, validated quality, delivery performance and total cost make Korean manufacturing competitiveness tangible. Macro improvements start the investigation; customer orders and cash flow should drive investment and procurement.
