Korea–Central Asia minerals:
where is the materials opportunity?

The strategic opening extends beyond extraction into refining, high-value materials, smart factories and finished products.

Korea and five Central Asian states agreed at their first C5+1 industry ministers’ meeting to pursue cooperation in critical minerals, industrial infrastructure and manufacturing AI. The important shift is from securing mines to building post-extraction value chains with Korean technology.

Three cooperation pillars
  • Integrated industrial zones, smart infrastructure and plant modernization
  • Refining, smelting, high-value materials and finished products
  • Smart factories, manufacturing AI and technical-talent exchanges

Why Central Asia now

Critical-mineral security depends not only on price but also on concentration and export-control risk. Central Asia has resources and strategic geography, while Korea can contribute purification, automation, quality control and customer-qualification experience.

Four moves for SME suppliers

Specify purity, not just the mineral

Impurities, particle size, moisture and qualification define value. Start with the target industry and final specification.

Calculate landed total cost

Include refining yield, inland logistics, finance, insurance, lead time and inventory—not just ore price.

Design traceability with local partners

Origin, ESG and carbon data must connect to each lot to pass global supply-chain due diligence.

Sell speed from sample to mass production

Korea’s advantage is rapid analysis, prototyping, surface treatment and customer-feedback execution.

BIZPECTRA view

The ministerial framework is not yet a contract or committed volume. It nevertheless opens a path for Korean materials firms to become process and quality partners rather than raw-material buyers. Small validation projects are more rational than large early investments.
