Beyond AI Chips: The 2.16GW Data-Centre Supply-Chain Opportunity

AI infrastructure is becoming a physical supply-chain story built on power distribution, copper alloys, reliable contacts and thermal management.

Anthropic signed an agreement on September 16 for a 2.16GW data-centre campus in Queensland, Australia, expected to begin AI inference operations in 2027. The project shows how AI investment is expanding beyond models and GPUs into power, cooling, networks and precision components.

Four supply-chain signals
  • Inference demand is distributing large data-center investment across new regions.
  • Gigawatt-scale campuses require transformers, switchgear, UPS, busbars and high-current connectors.
  • Renewable power and closed-loop cooling increase attention to efficiency and resource use.
  • Suppliers compete on reliability, traceability, lead time and engineering response—not piece price alone.

A data center is a giant power machine

Electricity must be transformed and distributed through multiple layers before reaching an accelerator. As current rises, contact resistance produces more heat and loss. Conductive alloys, joint design and plated interfaces become critical to safety and uptime.

Nickel underplate can support diffusion control and corrosion resistance. Gold, silver or tin may be selected for contact resistance, current capacity, mating method and environment. Applying precious metal only to functional areas through spot, stripe or selective plating can lower total cost without sacrificing performance.

Three opportunity layers

LayerComponentsKorean supplier value
PowerBusbars, high-current terminals, cablesCopper-alloy processing and low-resistance interfaces
SignalHigh-speed connectors, precision contacts, shieldsFine stamping and R2R selective plating
ThermalCold plates, tubing, pumps and sensorsCorrosion-resistant materials and controlled surfaces

Sell total cost, not cheap price

Downtime cost dwarfs the price of a small terminal. Buyers therefore review PPM, Cpk, resistance drift, plating-thickness distribution, thermal cycling, humidity and change control. Korea’s opportunity lies in precision production, fast samples, short decision paths and flexible engineering response.

A 90-day entry plan

  1. Days 1–30: choose the closest product family across power, signal or thermal systems.
  2. Days 31–60: standardize contact-resistance, heat-rise, thickness, adhesion, humidity and Cpk data.
  3. Days 61–90: prepare an English package covering capacity, sample lead time, change control and BCP.
  4. Use transparent copper, gold, silver, nickel and FX adjustment formulas.
  5. Offer spot or selective plating as a documented value-engineering option.

Risk discipline

The 2.16GW figure represents a planned campus scale, not simultaneous operation of every facility. Permitting, grid access, financing and demand can change the build sequence. Suppliers should stage investment against approved programs, actual BOMs and qualified forecasts.

BIZPECTRA view

AI infrastructure gives Korean manufacturing a route into the physical AI economy. Copper alloys, precision stamping, high-reliability connectors and R2R or spot plating are all credible strengths. Winning proposals will identify a specific heat, resistance, corrosion or lead-time problem and prove the improvement with data.
